Description | Moderate Islamist, nationalist, pro-monarchy party founded by an emblematic figure of Moroccan nationalism Allal El Fassi. El Fassi inaugurated its predecessor the National Party of Istiqlal (1937-1943), Morocco's first established political party, to transform Morocco from a French colonial protectorate to constitutional monarchy. Party was reborn later as the Party of Istiqlal with a focus on Islam and building a "Greater Morocco". Party's dramatic defeat after municipal elections held in 2015 engendered internal strife and violence between factions led by Abdelhamid Chabat and Nizar Baraka, which resulted in victory for Baraka, who took over on October 7, 2017 [Parti de l'Istiqlal (PI); Independence Party]. |
