Description | Far-right, ultra-nationalist party and successor to the National Democratic Party (Nationaldemokratische Partei Deutschlands, NPD) which was renamed "The Homeland" by member vote on June 3, 2023. Party's forerunner was the neo-Nazi German Reich Party (Deutsche Reichspartei, DRP) co-founded by publisher and Waffen-SS member Waldemar Schütz and dissolved in 1965. Members of the DRP continued on by renaming it the NPD in 1964. The NPD was at first led by Nazi critic, Senator and member of an aristocratic Pomeranian landowning family Adolf von Thadden, who achieved strong showings in regional elections for the party until rivals revealed he was a spy for the British M16 throughout the war. He resigned in 1975. Party was close to being banned by Germany's Constitutional Court in 2016 and 2017. Continued controversy over the NPD brand and failure at the legislative level convinced members to take the action of renaming the party. Party is led by Frank Franz [Die Heimat (DH)]. |
