Description | Center-left party active in Malawi's northern regions launched by human rights activist Chakufwa Chihana. Chihana was a rebel leader fighting against the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland (the new nation of Malawi was crafted out of the former Nyasaland) and British rule. After independence was declared on July 6, 1964, Chihana stood against the 30-year dictatorship imposed by Malawi's post-independence prime minister and president, Kamuzu Banda (ruled from July 6, 1964 to May 24, 1994). Chihana's life-time battle for a democratic Malawi earned him the sobriquet 'father of Malawian democracy' and worldwide acclaim. AFORD took third place and 36 seats after parliamentary elections held in 1994, a high point for the party. It quickly collapsed upon Chihana's death on June 12, 2006, holding just one seat in parliament since 2009. Party has been led by Chihana's son, Enoch. AFORD maintains a base in the city of Mzuzu, the capital of Malawi's Northern Region and the nation's third largest city. |
