| Description | One-time dominant right-wing nationalist party and Malawi's only legal one from 1966 to 1993. Party was wiped out after free elections were held in 1993 and has been in opposition ever since.
Party has tempered its absolutist philosophies and strives for a comeback under its leader since 2014, religious figure and 2020 presidential candidate Lazarus Chakwera.
Party launched on April 26, 2020 an alliance with Saulos Chilima's UTM which expanded to eight parties on April 28, 2020 (called the 'Tonse Alliance'). Alliance has a more-than-good chance of reclaiming the presidency (election planned for July 2, 2020) after vote-rigging controversies forced a re-run of the 2019 general election. |
