Description | Historic center-left party and co-founder of the Second Polish Republic (II Rzeczpospolita, II RP) which existed from 1918 to 1945 (continued as the Polish Government in Exile during WWII when Poland was occupied by Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union). Party opposed the Communist takeover of Poland in 1947 and operated in exile from 1948 until the Polish People's Republic dissolved on December 9, 1990. Party elements still operating in Poland in 1948 were forcibly merged into the hegemonic Polish United Workers' Party (PZPR) which had ruled Poland from December 15, 1948 to January 29, 1990. Party has been a favorite of coalition builders on the left, having participated in a large number of left-of-center coalitions formed since 1991. Party has been chaired by Wojciech Konieczny since March 16, 2019. Konieczny holds the party's sole seat in the Polish Senate [Polska Partia Socjalistyczna (PPS)]. |
