Description | Center-right electoral alliance and successor to the Aliança Democrática launched in 1979 and dissolved in 1983. Formation began as a coalition between the Social Democratic Party (PPD/PSD) and the CDS-Popular Party (CDS–PP). It was later joined by the Popular Monarchist (PPM) on January 3, 2024. Alliance was initially built as a short-term effort to contest elections only in the Azores constituency held on January 30, 2022. Discussions were held on December 9, 2023 to revive it again for the purpose of competing for seats in the Azores Legislative Assembly on February 4, 2024. These discussions resulted in the creation of the Democratic Alliance on January 7, 2024, the coalition's official foundation date. It then grew into a national effort ahead of general elections held on March 10, 2024. Alliance was co-founded by future Prime Minister Luís Montenegro of the PPD/PSD, future Defense Minister Nuno Melo of the CDS–PP and Lisbon Municipal Assembly Deputy Gonçalo da Câmara Pereira of the PPM. Montenegro became the alliance's leader, and Melo its vice president. Alliance succeeded in picking up 80 out of 230 seats in the National Assembly in 2024, a plurality, and has forwarded 21 candidates for seats in the European parliament in elections to be held on June 9, 2024. The list is led by Sebastião Bugalho [AD - Aliança Democrática and PPD/PSD.CDS-PP/PPM]. |
