Description | Socialist to Marxist-nationalist successor of the one-time all-dominant Burma Socialist Programme Party (BSPP, aka Myanmar Socialist Way Party) founded on July 4, 1962, which was Burma's ruling (and only) party for 26 years (from 1962 to 1988) led by strongman Ne Win (until July 23, 1988). The BSPP's one-party reign was undermined by the revolution of March/June 1988, which forced on Burma a multi-party system. Renamed party is still a proponent of the "Burmese Way to Socialism", which mixes Buddhist and Marxist precepts, but adds in a strong nationalism. Party works closely with the Junta which took over Burma in 2021 and has continued to remain in its favor. Party has been chaired by U Han Shwe since May 18, 2021 [တိုင်းရင်းသားစည်းလုံးညီညွတ်ရေးပါတီ (Tasnya or NUP)]. |
