Description | Norway’s King Harald V has had a temporary pacemaker implanted at a hospital in Malaysia after he became ill while on holiday there, the royal household said.
“The pacemaker was implanted due to a low heart rate. The decision was made earlier today, and the procedure was successful,” the palace said, adding that the king was doing well but still required rest.
The procedure should make the journey home safer, it said.
The 87-year-old monarch was on a private holiday in the Malaysia when he contracted an infection earlier this week.
Harald has been Norway’s ceremonial head of state since 1991 and is Europe’s oldest living monarch. He has had a series of ailments and illnesses in recent years, including heart and respiratory problems, and underwent surgery for the former.
In January, the palace said he was on sick leave until 2 February because of a respiratory infection, days after dismissing speculation that he might abdicate, following the lead of his second cousin and former queen of Denmark, Margrethe II. |
