Description | In some ways, DeBarros’s political insurgency resembles that of other young leftist women of color—most famously Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, but also Representatives Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, and Cori Bush of Missouri; New York state legislators Julia Salazar, Phara Souffrant Forrest, and Marcela Mitaynes; congressional hopeful Jessica Cisneros of Texas; and numerous others—many of them working-class, who have been challenging incumbents of the Democratic establishment and often winning. DeBarros’s likely primary opponent, Max Rose, is also a veteran of the Afghanistan War. But as a conservative, pro-cop Democrat, he is a natural antagonist for this movement. |
