Description | The Illinois House on Thursday voted to override Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner's vetoes of an income tax increase and state budget, ending a historic budget impasse that lasted more two years.
"Today, Republicans and Democrats stood together to enact a bipartisan balanced budget and end a destructive 736-day impasse," said Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan, the governor's political nemesis. "The people in this chamber did not do what was easy today. But we did what was right for the future of our state."
The 71-42 vote followed a two-hour lockdown due to a hazardous materials investigation and a brief debate that featured Republicans debating each other as Democrats remained largely silent. |
