DescriptionThe United States Olympic Committee has ended its effort to bring the 2024 Summer Olympics to Boston, multiple outlets reported Monday.

“It’s over,” one official told The Boston Globe.

The latest development comes after Boston Mayor Martin Walsh held a news conference earlier in the day announcing that he would not sign the Olympics host city contract that is contingent upon a taxpayer-funding guarantee.

“I’m not signing an agreement that’s going to cost the taxpayers if there are overruns,” Walsh said, according to The Associated Press.

The news conference came at the same time the USOC was set to meet with Republican Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker.

Following that meeting, Baker cited the case of New York City’s failed bid for the 2012 Summer Olympics and how it helped that city advance its own municipal initiatives.

“I’m not going to question whatever decision the USOC makes,” the governor told reporters. “I’ve had two brief conversations with the USOC,” Baker added, noting that he would support the organizing body’s ultimate decision and hoping that the International Olympic Committee would select an American city.
