Description | Nebraska became the nation’s 19th state to abolish the death penalty Wednesday, and the first conservative state to do so in more than four decades.
The state’s unicameral legislature overrode Republican Gov. Pete Ricketts veto by a vote of 30 to 19.
Though the state hasn’t executed anyone since a 1997 electrocution, there are still 10 inmates on Nebraska’s death row.
The bill was sponsored by Sen. Ernie Chambers, the legislature’s only independent. He recruited more than a dozen Republicans to support the measure for various reasons, including the practice’s overall cost due to a lengthy appeals process.
“If any other program was as inefficient and as costly as this has been, we would’ve gotten rid of it a long time ago,” Republican State Sen. Colby Coash said last week. |
