Description | Waggoner Carr, a Lubbock lawyer who went on to become one of the most powerful Democrats in Texas as speaker of the House and attorney general, died Wednesday in Austin after a two-year battle with cancer. He was 85.
"He was one of our original stalwart political leaders," State Rep. Delwin Jones said.
Jones, R-Lubbock, said Carr's debate skills in high school and college helped lay the foundation for a successful political career. He said Carr, along with the late Gov. Preston Smith, played a role in the success of Texas Tech.
