DescriptionDavenport Mayor Bill Gluba ordered former alderman Keith Meyer out of the council chamber Wednesday during discussion of the Rhythm City purchase.

Standing at the podium, Meyer told aldermen about seeing President Barack Obama and Gluba together earlier in the day at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds.

“Since I am hard of hearing, I can read lips and see some interesting conversations,” he said, mimicking the conversation. “‘Barry, you should buy a casino, you can make a lot of money.’”

Gluba immediately said “that was totally a lie and inappropriate.”

Meyer demanded to be heard, but aldermen called him out of order as Gluba slammed his gavel and told the former alderman to leave or be removed.

Police officers approached the podium, but Meyer left peacefully.

After the meeting, Gluba called Meyer’s tale “ridiculous.”

“As long as I’m sitting in that chair, we’re not going back to a circus with jesters,” he said. “We are not going to have incivility.

“It is an embarrassment to the people who do show up and want to comment with decorum,” Gluba said. “He doesn’t need to come back, and if he’s uncivil, he’ll be thrown out.”
