Description | Without Tommy Thompson, there wouldn't have been Romneycare.
On his final day as a presidential cabinet member - with his farewell party taking place in the background - the former Wisconsin governor received two visitors at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services with an urgent request.
Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.) needed a waiver to allow their home state to use $583 million in federal money to help kick-start a proposed universal health insurance program.
On Jan. 14, 2005, Thompson - now a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate - gave the moderate GOP governor and liberal lion what they wanted, signing the waiver before heading off to his going-away gala. |
