Description | Erskine Bowles, the ex-White House aide who Democrats had hoped to recruit into the open seat race for North Carolina governor, has passed on a campaign, a top Democrat tells POLITICO.
Bowles, who ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Senate twice, was the potential contender who ran most competitively with Republican Pat McCrory, according to recent polls.
Democrats liked the profile of a deficit commission chair and former university head who also had a national rolodex of fundraising contacts. But Bowles informed Democratic party leaders Thursday he would not pursue a bid for the seat being vacated by Gov. Bev Perdue.
That leaves two Democrats in the race: Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton and State Rep. Bill Faison.
Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx and Rep. Heath Shuler announced decisions against bids Wednesday. |
