DescriptionDan McCaffery, a former Philadelphia prosecutor, on Wednesday dropped out of what had been a three-way contest for the Democratic nomination for Pennsylvania attorney general.

"The current configuration of this race and the economic circumstances of the time make it extraordinarily difficult, if not impossible, to continue to mount a viable campaign," the suburban Philadelphia lawyer said in a statement.

Democratic leaders in Philadelphia had split their support between McCaffery and former Congressman Patrick Murphy. Former Gov. Ed Rendell is backing Murphy, for example, while Democratic city chairman Bob Brady had endorsed McCaffery.

Murphy will now square off with former Lackawanna County prosecutor Kathleen Kane in the April 24 Democratic primary, and said he would reach out to McCaffery and try "to earn his support."
