DescriptionUsers of Google Map links for their websites will be charged for heavy usage of the service, it has been revealed.

From 1 January 2012, Google will charge for the Google Maps API service when more than the limit of 25,000 map "hits" are made in a day.

Websites, especially travel firms, use Google Maps to link customers to a view of the destinations they inquire about.

Google is rumoured to be charging $4 per 1,000 views in excess of the limit.

I cant interact with the maps anymore. The counties don't show me percentages when I hover over them anymore.

Yes, I know. Hence the "Sorry for the things that are temporarily not working. "

Most of the functionality is back now.

The items remaining are dealing with generating GeoJSON files.

None of the Precinct maps were generated in GeoJSON, so those will have to be done.

Then the MapImage edit page will have to be changed to make GeoJSON maps instead of the Google format I had. (That's why trying to get rid of the extra line midpoints wasn't working.)

So, moving forward, if we wish to input maps, what type of map should we upload? Would we convert KML to GeoJSON?

was displaying maps with multiple 'islands'/parts (like HI-02 [Link] ) that don't have county maps something that has to be figured out on the conversion?

Is there an equivalent on the new format to having markers at specific locations for candidate home areas?

The site is looking better now. Thank you for fixing it up.

IndyGeorgia: So, moving forward, if we wish to input maps, what type of map should we upload? Would we convert KML to GeoJSON?

There shouldn't be any change in the way maps are input. The site code will convert it to the GeoJSON format when you click Generate Map (hopefully by later today).

RBH: was displaying maps with multiple 'islands'/parts (like HI-02 [Link] ) that don't have county maps something that has to be figured out on the conversion?

Heh. You figured out why some maps aren't displaying.

Yes. The Leaflet API only has polygon to add a single polygon to the map. It doesn't like the multi polygons in that function. I could just loop over all the polygons and add them separately, but I don't like them being treated as separate pieces, so I was trying to convert them to mini-GeoJSON files in the code. Hopefully I can work that one out soon.

RBH: Is there an equivalent on the new format to having markers at specific locations for candidate home areas?

I think so, but I haven't looked into that piece yet. The markers were a little too busy for some maps, so I wanted to make them an option you could turn on anyway. (On Container maps anyway, they should be default on for Race maps.)

Multipart solo maps and race markers should be good again.

Other slight growing pains things I’ve noticed with the change in format

1) places with counties that have an exclave within it have lines that go all the way to coordinates 0/0. Presumably the X- format is more agreeable to Google than current formats. For example: Colorado [Link]

2) guessing the displaying district lines on county maps thing would require something being adjusted too? Example of a district map without the lines or centering: [Link]

For some reason there was actually a 0x0 coordinate in that map. I just regenerated the map and it went away.

Yes. I know about that one as well. I will get to it.

Regenerate Maps seems to be working. I removed all the extra mid-county points from Colorado.

yeah, and regenerate+hard reload (ctrl+shift+R) in Chrome also works for refreshing map lines in that browser.

The Montana CD map was also a bit wonky on the Montana page until I realized that that a 1889-1919 map was attached to the 1993-present map. Once I separated those maps, the Montana map showed up as normal.

a coordinate oddity (probably caused by the use of tab in coordinates for one of the districts) in Arizona originally had some parts of the lines on the Equator. So, switching tab for spaces helped in making the map area normal.

But now the AZ-07 lines won't fill in on the main map. I noticed that the marker position was way off for latitude and tried putting in the marker position for the equivalent 2003-13 district. Then deleting the 13-23 entry and creating a new 13-23 entry with the same coordinates didn't do anything to fill it in.

also, i'd guess the bounding box and marker position are set automatically on a regeneration?

Completely confused by the AZ-7 thing. Everything seems correct. It's not complaining about anything. You can even see the boundary light up when you roll over the left column on the AZ page...

the thing i'm seeing is that AZ-7 isn't filled in on the main Arizona page ( [Link] ) and isn't clickable.

I know. I don't know why. If you roll over AZ-7 on the left side of the page, the polygon will highlight.

I think there were two polygons of the same district together wrapped oppositely. I removed half of the coordinates and it's working now.

alright..

And the district green line overlay works for multi 'part' (like a Hawaii 2nd CD) district for the first time I can recall

The whole TIGER map midpoint removal has been going smooth enough (partly because I started with states that don't have several hundred counties).

Wyoming involved removing spaces before the longitude with Notepad++ and California involved finding that two counties had a 0 or 1 in it's own row at the end of the coordinates. So just little things that are bound to popup on a switchover, I'd guess.

As for the maps.. The OS Maps really seemed different to me, and I figured that it's because OSM doesn't really emphasize highways as much as the Google Maps.. but it'd be fair to say i'm really used to the Google Maps display.

Not sure if the marker moving towards the correct location on the map as you Zoom In is an OpenStreet Map thing

Probably a Leaflet thing, but I don't see that...

some of the district maps (mostly those effective for the 2014 elections) aren't showing up whatsoever (either as lines, or as a OpenStreets wideshot).

An example being the New Hampshire Senate map: [Link]

So, not sure if it's some sort of random quirk with the maps, or if there's some little thing that has to be fixed. Because the district maps display on the pages, but not on the main page, and not on pages like this: [Link]

There are some strange control characters in the names of those Containers that JSON doesn't like. I put code in the Generate Map to remove all control characters from the Container Name. They will have to be regenerated.

Okay, I built the map tileserver on the server and it went okay, but I don't have enough disk space to host the whole global map data.

The site has used about 30,000 requests of the 50,000 free requests from Mapbox int the last week and a couple days. Mapbox charges $0.50/1,000 requests after that, so I could stay on Mapbox and pay around $30/month for normal months - but who knows how bad it will be right around general elections? Or if the site gets more popular?

I could get more drive space to run the tileserver for around $50/month. It would also take up some of the server processor time and RAM - though I'm not sure how much effect this would have on the rest of the site.

I could do an upgrade of the server for a little under $100/month that would boost the drive space, CPU and RAM to compensate, but $200/month for hosting the site is more than I want to spend.

I could spread the maps on the site around different map tile servers to try and stay under the various free limits. It would be more coding and software maintenance work and the site maps would be very inconsistent. I expect there would be times there would be map tile charges anyway.

Another possible solution would be to somehow take a static "snapshot" of the maps and have that as the default that shows on the pages and it wouldn't load the interactive map until you clicked on it or selected an interactive option. I'd have to figure out how to even do that, and it would take a second or two to respond, but I bet it would cut down on a lot of causual requests.
