DescriptionAs expected, state Rep. Joe Driver, R-Garland, Thursday announced he would retire from the House when his term ends in 2013.

"I am thankful to the people of Garland, Rowlett and Sachse who honored me by electing me and re-electing me to represent them since 1992," Driver said in a prepared statement. "I am proud of that our state has accomplished in that time."

The Legislature's redistricting process wasn't kind to Driver. He was paired in a district with Mesquite Republican Cindy Burkett. And though many felt Driver had a strong chance of winning the seat, he opted to retire.

"I will now return to private life and let others carry the torch," Driver said.

Driver is stepping down from the House as he deals with a Travis County investigation into whether he illegally accepted taxpayer reimbursements for travel expenses already paid for by his campaign. Last year Driver paid his campaign $49,426 after the Associated Press revealed the double-dipping.
