Description | Former Gov. Edwin Edwards says that, in a way, he's glad he did not receive a pardon that would have restored all of his rights, including the ability to run for office.
"I'm glad I can't run," Edwards said recently at the Baton Rouge Press Club. "If I had run, I would have won, and I'd have all these problems."
The problems, he said, include a state economy that's weak and a state budget that's in serious trouble, to the tune of more than $1 billion.
Edwards, a lifetime Democrat who served 16 years as governor, said he's disappointed in the downfall of the Democratic Party, but he believes Democrats brought in on themselves by shifting too far to the left.
Asked how the party could initiate immediate change, he joked, "Change the name." |
