State to send monitors to observe East Arkansas election

| Description | State monitors will observe a special election for a vacant East Arkansas House seat that has drawn complaints of voter fraud.
The state Board of Election Commissioners voted today to send monitors to Crittenden County for the special election on Tuesday, said Alex Reed, spokesman for Secretary of State Mark Martin, who serves as chairman of the board.
The election will determine who represents District 54 in the state House. The seat became vacant with the resignation in January of Fred Smith of Crawfordsville following his conviction of felony theft in Chicot County.
Democrat Hudson Hallum of Marion faces Republican John Geelan, also of Marion. Kim Felker of Crawfordsville, who lost to Hallum in the May 10 Democratic primary runoff, has claimed that irregularities occurred in that election. She and Geelan both requested monitors for Tuesday’s special general election.
Hallum has said he saw no problems with the runoff election but did not see anything wrong with state monitors observing the election. |
