DescriptionONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- For months, Onondaga County Legislator Thomas Buckel had weighed his political future. For a time, he considered a run for congress. But, in the end, he decided a seat on the bench in State Supreme Court would provide more of an opportunity make an impact than a seat in the House of Representatives.

"You might get something done over 10, 15 or 20 years, although you can serve people on a local level for problems. Here, I can get things done on day one," Buckel said.

Buckel's decision pleased at least one member of his audience: Former congressman Dan Maffei, who has made no secret about considering a bid to return to Washington.

"Him deciding to run for judge does make it easier for me. I would not have wanted to run in a primary situation against somebody who I'm very close to. We've campaigned together and 99 percent of the issues we agree on," Maffei said.

Maffei, stung by his defeat at the polls in a tight race with republican Ann Marie Buerkle, says he's overcome the shock of that loss.

"I think I was a very, very good congressman. I think the more time that passes, people see that, more and more. I was more of a workhorse than a showhorse and, maybe, that was my downfall," Maffei said.
