Description | Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has proposed laying off 5,466 state workers and eliminating 1,000 vacant positions to deal with a $1.6 billion budget shortfall.
In a plan submitted Tuesday afternoon to the Democratic leadership, Malloy outlined department cuts and a suggested number of layoffs, which could change if managers find savings elsewhere.
The cuts equal $701.7 million in the first year, starting Friday, and $901.2 million in the second year. Malloy had originally estimated the layoffs at 7,500 or more.
Some of the big hits include 1,019 positions in corrections, which is about 15.7 percent of the workforce; 817 in the Department of Transportation; 450 in the Judicial Department; 540 in the Department of Development Services; 403 for the state universities and community colleges; 333 for the University of Connecticut; 165 at the UConn Health Center and 285 in the Department of Emergency Services. |
