DescriptionGovernment watchdog turned politician, City Councilman Carl DeMaio said he's running for San Diego mayor to continue his push to reduce public employee pensions and fix the city's financial problems from the top.

For DeMaio, who plans to make his formal announcement Sunday at the RB Alive! Expo in Rancho Bernardo, the decision was the natural progression of his ongoing efforts to make city government less costly and more efficient.

"I think from what we've heard from the public they're sick and tired of politicians from both parties that go down there (to City Hall) and play nicey-nice and don't really get anything done because they're not willing to tackle the major issues and make tough decisions," he said in an interview. "That's never been my style."

DeMaio, 36, joins what could end up being a crowded field of contenders with no clear front-runner to replace Mayor Jerry Sanders, who is being forced out by term limits. The declared candidates include District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis and state Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher, who plans to announce Monday. Like DeMaio, they are Republicans.

Several others are considering a run, including Republican City Councilman Kevin Faulconer and Rep. Bob Filner and state Sen. Christine Kehoe, both Democrats.

The mayoral primary is exactly 12 months away -- June 5, 2012 -- and city campaign laws prevented candidates from collecting contributions until Sunday. Now that the restriction has been lifted, candidates are expected to declare soon if they will run.
