Description"The final tally is in: 49 people will be running for Luzerne County Council in the May 17 primary.

Democrats and Republicans will each get to choose 11 candidates from their party to advance to the general election.

Competition will be heavy on the Democratic side, with 33 contenders.

Sixteen Republicans are running, which means only five won’t make the cut.

Independent and third-party candidates may get on the ballot after the primaries if they secure the nearly 1,000 nomination signatures.

Voters will be free to choose 11 candidates of any political registration in November.

The chosen 11 will take office in January and oversee the county’s historic switch to a home rule government system.

Council members will be paid $8,000 per year and be responsible for choosing the new county manager, making appointments to boards and authorities and approving the county budget, tax rate, union contracts and policies.

County Election Bureau Director Leonard Piazza stressed that the contenders are still considered unofficial candidates because their nomination petitions must still be reviewed by his office and other candidates to ensure they comply with all legal requirements.

The contenders have a broad mix of experience."
