DescriptionThe Franklin County Board of Elections voted unanimously yesterday to refer a man for prosecution, saying he forged signatures on ballot petitions for Columbus school-board President Carol Perkins and member Gary Baker.

The issue apparently has knocked Baker out of the race because about 15 pages of a petition - with each page containing as many as 19 signatures - were set aside as potentially fraudulent.

Perkins remains on the ballot because she had enough other signatures that were deemed valid.

"When you've got people who are helping you to procure signatures, one doesn't really expect one to do something like this," Baker said. "I'm shocked."

The person circulating petitions on behalf of both Baker and Perkins signed his name as Ronald Smith and listed his address as being on Fairwood Avenue on the South Side.

If he did forge signatures, he could be charged with a fifth-degree felony, officials said. That charge carries a penalty of up to a year in prison and a $2,500 fine.
