Description | It's anybody's guess who will be the next governor of Tokyo.
With just two months to go before election campaigning officially kicks off, not one person has come forward to announce his or her candidacy.
Even the incumbent governor, Shintaro Ishihara, who at 78 is winding up his third term at the helm of the metropolitan government, has remained mum about his intentions.
At least four other figures--State Minister for Government Revitalization Renho; former Miyazaki Governor Hideo Higashikokubaru; New Renaissance Party leader Yoichi Masuzoe; and Tokyo Vice Governor Naoki Inose--have emerged as, or are rumored to be, possible contenders to succeed Ishihara.
But all are keeping their cards close to their chests in the Tokyo race. Traditionally, by engaging in holdout tactics, the late-comer has emerged victorious. |
