Description | There is no hope of a socially moderate Conservative Party of Canada in the next few years, MP Keith Martin said Wednesday in announcing he's quitting the fledgling movement to run for the Liberals in the next election.
Martin, thrice elected as a Reform and Canadian Alliance MP since 1993, said he will sit as an independent for now and seek the Liberal nomination in his Vancouver Island riding for the coming general election.
"I've been in the system for 10 years and all I can say is that, in looking down the road for four years, I do not believe the new party's views on social issues will be consistent with what I've always fought for," said Martin. |
