Description | Vermont’s race for governor can finally move into gear after a recount confirmed that Peter Shumlin, the State Senate president pro tem, won the Democratic primary last month.
The recount, completed Friday, gave Mr. Shumlin an additional 25 votes, putting him 203 votes ahead of his closest challenger, State Senator Doug Racine. Mr. Racine conceded on Friday and promised to help Mr. Shumlin in his race against Lt. Gov. Brian Dubie, a Republican.
Gov. Jim Douglas, also a Republican, is leaving office after eight years. The five-way Democratic primary was held Aug. 24, and Mr. Racine took the rare step of demanding a recount when preliminary results found Mr. Shumlin had won by fewer than 200 votes.
Unlike Florida’s infamous presidential recount, which dragged on for 36 days, this one lasted a mere two. And it was far less rancorous: all five Democratic primary candidates toured the state together this week in a show of unity. Still, some Democrats worried that the recount delay gave Mr. Dubie, who was unopposed in the Republican primary, a leg up. |
