DescriptionWith the Republican primary a week away, Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker is finally taking shots at former U.S. Rep. Mark Neumann — a sign that the race for the gubernatorial nomination likely has gotten closer than the frontrunner would like.

In the past week, Walker has issued statements attacking Neumann, released a TV commercial linking him to Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and mailed out campaign information on the same topic.

This comes after a long season in which Walker practically ignored Neumann, focusing instead on presumptive Democratic nominee, Tom Barrett.

The course change, especially at such a late date, has some political experts wondering if Walker has internal polling numbers that show his lead slipping.

"These moves seem to show that something has changed, something that has Walker now considering Neumann an actual threat," said Charles Franklin, a UW-Madison political science professor and polling expert. "I'll put it this way, Ron Johnson is not running attack ads on Dave Westlake, is he?"
