Description | "Count Congressman Jason Altmire (D-4) among the politicians who doesn’t think a mosque should be built two blocks away from where the Twin Towers once stood.
Altmire said over the weekend that he is “offended” by the idea of building the mosque and Islamic cultural center near Ground Zero, where the worst of the Sept. 11, 200 terrorist attacks occurred. Acknowledging the project’s backers have a legal and constitutional freedom to do so, Altmire said “there should be some discussion about what is right morally, as well as just what you’re allowed to do.”
Altmire made his comments during a KDKA radio interview shortly after President Obama came out in support of the project. Opposition to the plan has become a rallying cry for Republicans, and the GOP has used Obama’s recent comments to inject the issue into local races. Democrats, meanwhile, have more often than not tried to avoid speaking on the issue. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg supports the project.
“I think that the people who are supportive of putting the mosque there are missing the point of the impact and the devastation that [Sept. 11] had to us as a country but certainly to that part of the country that was directly impacted by that,” Altmire said." |
