DescriptionAs state governments across the country begin the New Year with their 2008 legislative sessions, New Democrat leaders are stepping forward with innovative proposals to address the toughest issues facing the country. One such leader is Speaker of the Colorado House of Representatives, Andrew Romanoff.

In his opening remarks to the 2008 legislative session, Speaker Romanoff put forth a progressive agenda focused primarily on improving pre-school through post secondary education, expanding healthcare, stimulating the economy, and safeguarding the environment.

"What the people of Colorado want -- what our children deserve -- is a shot at the American Dream: a solid education, a steady source of health care, a safe place to live and grow up," said Speaker Romanoff. That's not too much for them to expect, and it's not too much for us to deliver."

Speaker Romanoff believes that one of the single most effective investments that his state can make is in early childhood education, and asked the legislature in his speech to promote high-quality preschool and full-day kindergarten programs. In addition, he understands that quality teachers are crucial to the ongoing development of Colorado's students. Romanoff proposed that the state provide not only the proper tools teachers need to do their job effectively -- the time, training, and technology -- but must also reward high-skilled teachers.

Speaker Romanoff also argued that in today's competitive global economy Colorado's children need more than a high-school diploma. They must have access to affordable higher education, including an advanced degree or vocational training.
