Description | "They both say the state has a right to protect its border with Mexico if the federal government will not.
Congressman Patrick Murphy and candidate Mike Fitzpatrick agree on one thing : Arizona has the right to protect its border with Mexico since the federal government has failed to do so.
Both candidates seeking the 8th District congressional seat said they disagree with the Obama administration's lawsuit that was filed Tuesday to stop the state of Arizona from implementing its new law aimed at illegal immigrants. The law, which would go into effect July 29, requires state police to ask residents about their immigration status if there is cause for suspicion about it. Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer also wants more border patrol personnel in the field as part of the law, because "Arizona is under attack from violent Mexican drug and immigrant smuggling cartels," she said Tuesday in a statement.
Fitzpatrick, the Republican who lost his congressional seat to Murphy almost four years ago, said the administration should "send National Guardsmen to patrol the borders, not a team of lawyers to sue the state of Arizona." Arizona has taken the proper security measures to protect its border and "the current administration has defunded chief operations of our border security," the challenger said.
"Murphy is Washington and he's failed to protect Arizona's border," Fitzpatrick said. "When he criticizes the (Obama) administration, he's criticizing himself and his colleagues in Congress, as he should." |
