Description | Texas Democrats on Friday asked Texas House Speaker Joe Straus to remove Republican State Rep. Linda Harper-Brown from the powerful House Transportation Committee because she and her husband have ties to companies that make millions off of state transportation contracts.
Harper-Brown's 2010 Mercedes E550 is owned by one of those companies, Durable Enterprises Equipment Ltd. Her husband, William E. Brown III, said the luxury sedan and the 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe he drives are payment for accounting work he does for Durable's owner.
"It appears Linda Harper-Brown has profited by securing luxury vehicles in return for doing legislative favors for an industry with business before her committee," Texas Democratic Party chairman Boyd Richie said in prepared statement Friday. "Speaker Straus should remove her from the Transportation Committee until a time when these charges have been addressed."
Harper-Brown, R-Irving, declined to comment through a spokesman Friday. Straus could not immediately be reached for comment. |
