| Description | Houston attorney Kathie Glass won the Libertarian nomination for governor Saturday and vowed to siphon conservative support from Republican incumbent Rick Perry by appealing to Tea Party activists and supporters of former GOP candidate Debra Medina.
In San Antonio, delegates to the liberal Green Party chose retired teacher Deb Shafto of Houston as their gubernatorial nominee, but the party's candidate slate can't be immediately certified because of a lawsuit over the party's petition drive to get on the November ballot.
The moves further defined the November general election picture, now dominated by Perry and his Democratic challenger, former Houston Mayor Bill White. Libertarians would mostly likely draw votes from Republicans; The Greens, if they overcome the legal challenge filed by the Texas Democratic Party, would compete for liberals more likely to vote Democratic.
Glass and Shafto, who helped found the Green Party in Texas, both said they will insist on being included in pre-election debates with the two major candidates and signaled their intention to run hard against Perry's record.
Glass, 56, making her first bid for statewide office since running for attorney general as a Libertarian in 1982, secured the nomination over fellow Houstonian Jeff Daiell after a third candidate, Steve Nichols of Frisco, announced his withdrawal from the race and threw his support to Glass.
"The Kathie Glass campaign for governor is officially open," Glass declared after the tally of ballots showed her with a 73-25 vote victory.
Buoyed by growth as an alternative to the major parties, Libertarians hope to appeal to disenchanted voters with their message of limited government and personal freedoms. |
