RICHMOND — Wesley Clark is the first Democratic presidential candidate to begin airing television ads in Virginia.

The 60-second ad, spotlighting the retired general's military background, began showing in selected markets Tuesday night and was airing Wednesday in Richmond, Roanoke and Norfolk markets and on cable television in northern Virginia.

Clark is one of nine Democrats seeking the party's nomination to run for president. Virginia's primary is Feb. 10.

The Clark ad begins with a narrative about Clark being wounded in Vietnam, and goes on to talk about his service in the Balkans, where he helped broker a peace deal and led coalition forces that defeated the Serbians in Kosovo.

Robert Hinkle, state communications director for the Clark campaign, said it has 20 paid staffers in Virginia and plans to open offices in Roanoke, Charlottesville, Norfolk and Arlington. The campaign opened an office last week in Richmond.
