Description | Bill White's folks were quick to jump on the joint Houston Chronicle/Texas Tribune weekend report about how troubled children in residential facilities around the state are being abused. They say it's the latest in a parade of abuse scandals to occur during Gov. Rick Perry's decade-long tenure.
According to the Chron/Tribune report -- the first collaboration between the two news organizations, by the way -- more than 250 confirmed abuse and neglect cases have occurred during the past two years in residential treatment centers contracted by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. In one incident, staffers told developmentally disabled girls to fight one another, offering them after-school snacks as a prize.
"Accountability starts at the top, and it's the governor's obligation to know what is going on in his state agencies," White said. "The governor needs to be looking out for Texas kids. As governor, I would do everything in my power to guarantee their safety, and to ensure that crimes against children are punished to the fullest extent of the law."
White, in a statement, pointed to the 2007 Texas Youth Commission sexual abuse scandal and the fight club scandal that surfaced a year ago at Corpus Christi State School, a facility operated by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services. Perry's office took action in both cases after the media brought both to light.
"This is not the first time that Perry's state agencies have come under fire for abusing the most vulnerable Texans," spokesperson Katy Bacon said. "After the abuse and cover-ups at TYC and the Corpus Christi State School, Perry should have been especially alert to ensuring this kind of abuse would not happen."
