Description | Traditionally, a sitting Speaker is re-elected unopposed by the Commons without a vote, but if a single MP shouts "object" when the position is debated on Tuesday, a formal vote must be held.
Mr Bercow is deeply unpopular with many Tories and was elected Speaker last year only with the support of Labour MPs. Some believe that the creation of a coalition government presents them with an excuse to oust him.
Sir Menzies "Ming" Campbell, the former Liberal Democrat leader who ran for the post in 2000, is the favoured candidate among Conservatives. One backbencher said he would be "a big improvement".
Some Tory MPs have speculated that their colleague, Nadine Dorries, who is an outspoken critic of the Speaker, may trigger a vote. |
