Description | Squeezed out of a U.S. Senate race dominated by political heavyweights, former North Miami Mayor Kevin Burns said Wednesday that he would run for the state Senate instead.
Burns, a Democrat, is seeking the seat currently held by Democrat Dan Gelber, who is running for attorney general. Burns will face Democrat Gwen Margolis — who represented the Miami-Dade district before Gelber — in the Aug. 24 primary.
Burns had been struggling for attention and dollars against the Democratic frontrunner in the Senate contest, U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek of Miami.
"We were not going to be able to compete with the fundraising dollars out there," Burns said. "This is a way for me to continue my public service." |
