Description | In his first year in office, Gov. Tim Pawlenty cut more than $2 billion from Minnesota's government spending base, adhering to a pledge not to raise taxes despite a record deficit.
The most conservative governor in recent years on social issues, Pawlenty signed into law a waiting period for abortions and a law making it easier to get a permit to carry a handgun. He pushed the Legislature to establish tax-exempt zones to encourage rural job development. He launched a major initiative to make Minnesota a leader in the bioscience industry and set up task forces to find ways to build stadiums for the Minnesota Twins and Vikings, along with privately built and operated "fast lanes" to ease highway congestion.
