Description | There’s no clear winner yet from Tuesday evening’s Utah precinct caucuses, but several top Republicans believe the outcome spells trouble for GOP Sen. Robert Bennett at the May nominating convention.
Interest in the Republican Senate primary boosted turnout to nearly 80,000, according to early estimates—well above the typical 30,000 to 35,000 people who have turned out to elect the 3,500 delegates to the state party convention. Many precincts reported double and even triple the caucus-goers they had seen two years ago, along with many first-time voters.
The delegates selected at the caucuses will vote at the May convention, where if no candidate gets 60 percent, the top two vote-getters will advance to a June primary. |
