Description | ALBUQUERQUE — A candidate with a famous New Mexico political name announced Sunday that he's joining the crowded field in the Republican gubernatorial primary.
Pete Domenici Jr., the son of longtime U.S. Sen. Pete Domenici, is running for the Republican gubernatorial nomination.
The younger Domenici, an Albuquerque lawyer, joins former state GOP chairman Allen Weh, Doña Ana County District Attorney Susana Martinez, state Rep. Janice Arnold-Jones of Albuquerque and businessman Doug Turner, who runs an Albuquerque public relations firm, in the Republican primary race.
Lt. Gov. Diane Denish is seeking the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. It appears at this point that she won't have serious primary opposition.
All of the Republican candidates except Martinez are from Albuquerque.
Political analyst Brian Sanderoff said none of the other four Republicans in the primary race is a household name.
But Sanderoff said while Domenici could benefit from his father's fundraising contacts and connections with party leaders, in the end he must establish his own identity. |
