DescriptionLiberal Prime Minister Paul Martin has inflamed class warfare in Canada, pitting the rich against the poor, former NDP leader Ed Broadbent charged Thursday.

To fight what he calls an agenda of division, the respected elder statesman of the NDP says he wants to return to federal politics as a candidate in the Ottawa Centre riding. Broadbent, who led New Democrats to their strongest national showing ever in the 1988 election, used rhetoric of that era to complain Canadian politics has been pulled to the right from the traditional, moderate centre.

"We have had (class) warfare by stealth for the past decade," said Broadbent, referring to Martin's nine years as finance minister beginning in 1993.
