Description | Former Manhattan Beach mayor and Sen. Bob Beverly, 84, died peacefully at home Oct. 14.
Beverly lived in Manhattan Beach for nearly 60 years and raised four children - Barbara, Bill, Bob and Brian - in the Sand Dune Park area of town.
The same year that he received his law degree specializing in municipal and government law, 1952, he and his wife, Bettelu, moved to Manhattan Beach. Beverly’s son Bill said they moved three times in Manhattan Beach. “He loved this city. He would say the only reason to move is to be closer to the water,” said Beverly. The family moved from the bottom of Sand Dune Park at 31st Street to the top of the dune at 26th Street, then to 27th Street and Highland Avenue. “He liked to throw the Frisbee and he had a couple of boats. I remember when we used to sail a catamaran from King Harbor and beach it at 26th Street for the weekend,” said Beverly. “That was a different time.”
The former three-time mayor’s political journey began with a seat on the Manhattan Beach Planning Commission, then nine years on City Council followed and in 1967 Beverly won a seat in the state Assembly for the 46th District. |
