| Description | Just when we were starting to miss the comic misadventures of Creigh “What’s In Your Wallet?” Deeds, Dave Marsden comes to the rescue!
It seems that Marsden may have avoided violating campaign finance disclosure laws (as of 11/23 SBE still did not show a senate filing), but in the process he has subjected himself to being a total laughingstock.
As we’ve pointed out, in order to file candidate papers with the State Board of Elections, one must be a qualified voter for that office — in other words, you actually have to live within the district you want to represent. Since Marsden didn’t live in the 37th Senate Dist., he had to move — and quick since he only had until this Fri. to file paperwork or else be in violation of Virginia’s campaign finance disclosure laws. Now comes word from the WashPo that Marsden has, well, let’s leave it to him to say…
"Marsden said Monday that he has rented a room in a house which sits in both the House and Senate districts, allowing him to run for Cuccinelli’s seat. He said he has slept there for several nights."
So, has Marsden registered his car at the address of his room? Changed his driver’s license and insurance to the address of his new room? (I hope that he has at least changed the sheets — who knows what was going on in that room before he arrived.) And did his wife of 40 years move to the room with him? You know, all the typical things one does when establishing a true residence and not just a sham.
So yes, it appears that Marsden did opt for the cheesy choice that we outlined just yesterday.
One has to wonder if he’ll put his current home on the market, sell it and use the proceeds from the sale to buy a home in the new district within this time frame or if he instead opts for something cheesy like renting an apartment or a room in someone’s basement. |
