Description | "Following a state-mandated recount for the fourth open seat on the Pennsylvania Superior Court, Philadelphia County Common Pleas Judge Anne E. Lazarus has been declared the winner.
The Pennsylvania Department of State announced the results this morning, confirming that Judge Lazarus earned more votes than three other candidates, who were within half of 1 percentage point. That small separation triggers a recount, following the passage of a 2004 law.
The other candidates in contention were Allegheny County Common Pleas Judge Robert J. Colville, Mt. Lebanon attorney Temp Smith, and Allegheny County Assistant District Attorney Kevin McCarthy.
Judges Colville and Lazarus, along with Mr. McCarthy agreed to waive the recount, believing that the results would not likely change the winner of the race and instead would waste state money.
However, Mr. Smith would not waive the recount, saying that the results were too close.
The vote totals were:
• Judge Lazaurs, 726,917
• Judge Colville, 724,830
• Mr. Smith, 723,117
• Mr. McCarthy, 714,237
Judge Lazarus, a Democrat, will join Sallie Mundy, Judy Olson and Paula Ott, all Republicans, who were elected to the court last month and will begin their terms in January." |
