Description | From the moment former State Sen. Jeff Smith handed in his resignation, the intrigue surrounding who would replace him as been the talk of city politics.
Saturday’s vibrant meeting of Democratic Party officials lived up to its billing, with a divided panel backing a legislative novice, Joe Keaveny, as their choice to replace Smith in the State Senate.
“I can’t wait to get to work,” said Keaveny, 52.
Smith resigned from the State Senate last month after pleading guilty to federal conspiracy charges for his role in a political cover-up. The panel to nominate his replacement was made up of Democratic ward committee members from within the Fourth Senate District, which covers about half of the city of St. Louis.
Though Keaveny has a relatively thin political resume, he is the Democratic Committeeman of the 28th Ward — a position which gave Keaveny the ability to vote for himself to get the nomination.
Keaveny also had the support of Mayor Francis Slay, who previously backed Keaveny in an unsuccessful School Board campaign four years ago. |
