Description | Ending months of speculation over whether he'd seek the congressional seat once held by his father, state Senate Minority Leader John McKinney on Wednesday said he will not challenge U.S. Rep. Jim Himes next year.
McKinney, 45, in an interview with Hearst Connecticut Newspapers, said he wants to spend more time with his three children, whose ages range from 9 to 13.
One of the issues he had to overcome in reaching the family-oriented decision was his belief that Himes will be vulnerable next year in the 17-town district because there won't be a candidate like President Barack Obama at the top of the Democratic ticket.
"It is definitely my intention to run for re-election to the state Senate," McKinney said. "The course I'm choosing right now gives me the opportunity to do something I love, which is to help others; be a public servant; help the people of the state of Connecticut and at the same time it allows me to stay at home and be the father I want to be for my kids."
But he wouldn't rule out a possible campaign for statewide office next year.
"I think our state is run incredibly well by Gov. [M. Jodi] Rell and I support her tremendously, but if I have an opportunity to stay at home, be the father I want to be with my kids and help people out in Connecticut in public office, that's something I'll look at," he said. |
