Description | CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- William R. "Bill'' Sharpe Jr., the longest serving West Virginia state senator until his retirement last year, has died. He was 80.
Sharpe, who died Sunday, had undergone a 10-hour surgery in January 2007 to treat what his doctor called a giant aneurysm.
A Lewis County Democrat, Sharpe first won election in 1960. He was re-elected 10 times, while missing just one four-year term in the early 1980s.
For 36 years, Sharpe served as the Senate's second highest ranking officer as president pro tempore.
