Ackerman found trapped beneath tractor underwater

PEORIA (AP) -- A retired state representative is dead after being pulled from a lake outside his home in rural Morton.
Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll says 73-year-old Jay Ackerman of Morton was pronounced dead Monday in the emergency room at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
Ingersoll says Ackerman was mowing his lawn when the tractor went into the lake and overturned into three feet of water. When Ackerman was found by his daughter, he was trapped beneath the tractor underwater.
Ackerman was a Republican who served in the House from 1979 to 1982 and from 1987 to 1999.
An autopsy is planned.
